A former District Chief Executive under the erstwhile Mahama administration, Hon. James Gunu, has condemned the recent attack on a female journalist by one Hajia Fati of the NPP at the party’s headquarters in Accra last Friday and has called on the party hierarchy not to only condemn the unruly behavior of the party activist but must also suspend her.
The Multimedia journalist, Ohemaa Sekyewa, was said to be at the party’s headquarters where the suspended
According to reports, in an attempt to take a shot of events at the venue, Hajia Fati who was reported to have prevented Sammy Crabbe from picking the nomination forms got irritated and slapped the reporter.
The incident has generated a public outcry especially within the media fraternity.
Hon. Gunu, says the party’s press conference held in the mid-hours of Tuesday, to condemn Hajia’s uncultured attitude is unsatisfactory.
“The NPP should not only condemn, they must suspend Hajia Fati for her attack on the multimedia journalist”.
He added that such incidents would never be perpetrated by any member of his party in this modern world of rule of law.
“I maintain this won’t happen at the NDC’ headquarters.
“The rough edged Hajia Fati’s action is a deliberate and conscious action to intimidate and put fear in the Ghanaian journalist from reporting the truth under the NPP government.”
The former DCE, has therefore called on Civil Societies, to join in the fight against attacks on journalist.
“Civil Society Organizations must not leave the fight against attacks on journalists to the Ghana Journalists (GJA) Association alone.”
This incident comes after just a week when the world has celebrated and called for press freedom, an event that was partly held here in Ghana.
