Take Back Control by Bismarck Tay

It is said that you can’t control how people treat you but you can control how you feel about it. There are just some things in life that we have no control over. Where we were born, when we were born, to whom we were born, how we were born, how some people treat us, the ups and downs of life, etc.

But there are some things too that are completely within our control. Such as the friends we keep, how we project ourselves to lothers, how we feel about people and their actions towards us, how we think, when to be happy and sad, our attitude, etc.

It is a complete disaster to not know what you can control in life and what you can’t. It is even more deadly if you interchange one for the other. Our everyday lives are shaped by these two factors. Our knowledge of the two and how we respond to them play a major role in how our lives turn out. To the things we can’t control, complaining and feeling bad about them is as completely unintelligent as complaining about the colour of the ocean. Your complaint won’t make any difference. To those things we can control, complaining and doing nothing about them is not only equally unintelligent, but it is a sure road to frustration and perpetual regrets.

I therefore share with you the serenity prayer by Reinhold Niebuhr (1892–1971) which says:
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, Courage to change the things I can, and the Wisdom to know the difference”

Knowing the difference is the first step to acting accordingly. So before you enter 2017, decide to take total responsibility for your actions, your thoughts and your attitude. Exercise control over whom you spend time mostly with. Control how you feel about the actions of people. Control how you think. Choose to be positive always. Don’t allow anyone to keep you down for long. You have the power to feel whatever you want to feel. You have the power to rejoice and be happy always. Yes, you do. Don’t enter 2017 with a sad, heavy heart. Don’t enter the new year with old unproductive habits, mindsets and attitudes.

I believe it so strongly that to those who will be ready to take action and do what needs to be done on themselves, 2017 is going to be their most productive year. It will be my most productive year because I will take action with courage to change the things I can change about myself. To those I can’t change, I will leave them to my Big God to handle. Will you join me? Will you be part of those who will courageously take action in 2017? If you will accept to take control, I know and believe strongly that like joke, like joke, same time next year, our stories will change for the better.

Wishing you a fantastic last Friday of 2016.

From your friend,
Bismark Tay.
